From Byzantium to Modernism
20 March – 8 May 2015
at the Evagoras Lanitis Centre, Limassol
The exhibition «Recto/Verso: From Byzantium to Modernism» opened its doors yesterday, 20th of March 2015, at the Evagoras Lanitis Centre (behind the Limassol Medieval Castle). The exhibition showcases Limassol region’s religious treasures along with the work of contemporary Cypriot artists and it is organised by the Limassol Tourism Board, the Evagoras and Kathleen Lanitis Foundation and the Ministry of Education and Culture in collaboration with the Municipality of Limassol and the Holy Bishopric of Limassol, curated by Dr. Nadia Anaxagorou. The exhibition will remain open until the 8th of May 2015.
The exhibition focuses on some to the most significant icons, originating from monasteries and village churches of the Limassol diocese. Eight of these icons are two-sided, thus the title Recto/Verso, indicating a representation at both sides, with the image of the Virgin with Child at the front (recto) and that of the Crucifixion or Via Crucis or simply a cross with decorative motifs at the back (verso).
During the opening, Mr Tony Antoniou, Chairman of the Limassol Tourism Board, highlighted the importance of promoting our religious and cultural heritage not only to Cypriots but to tourists as well, since there is increasing interest for religious tourism from countries such as Russia and Ukraine. At the same time, he said, such a premium exhibition is expected to attract the thousands of foreign business people that live and work in the Limassol region and to upgrade the overall cultural calendar of Cyprus.
