Take care, when it comes to food!
Have you ever thought about the quality of the food you and your family consume? If yes, then you may have well realized that you are actually putting a lot of trust in to something you already consume without having the slightest possibility to know whether it meets at least the minimum standards on food quality.
How can you for instance make sure that your food is free of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)? Or, how can you be sure that the baby food you just bought is free of pesticides, antibiotics and other substances for which there is serious suspicion that they are linked to carcinogenesis and cause other deceases? And what is the impact of the food you consume on the environment?
As a consumer and as a parent, you then feel there are is no way to effectively protect yourself, your family and the environment.
Or is there one? Well, actually there is. It is called organic food. Organic food is food produced and processed organically. It is free of GMOs and antibiotics, hormones, food additives, such as artificial flavour enhancers, colourings and other preservatives. It is the food that nature itself is producing in exactly the same way for millions of years now.
By contrast, the consumption conventional food which is food produced with chemical means, can result in the intake of substances that are banned in organic farming, i.e. fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, conservatives, hormones and livestock antibiotics or even GMOs. For instance, even if you wash thoroughly fruits and vegetables that have been treated with chemical pesticides, you can still not be sure that you avoid the intake of residues of this substance.
Again, you may ask yourself how you can be sure as a consumer that these rules that ban the above substances in organic farming are indeed adhered. The answer to this justified question is delivered by the European Union regulatory framework on organic farming which provides for specific labelling of organic products as well as for certification following regular and surprise inspections to ensure compliance.
Organic products in all European Union countries carry the special EU-logo that distinguishes organic food and drinks from non-organic products. In addition, organic products also carry the certification of the organisation that carried out inspections.
However, the advantages of organic food are not limited to human health. They are also extended to the natural environment.
The ban on GMOs in organic agriculture, for instance, helps preserve nature from genetic contamination. Similarly, the ban on antibiotics helps protect the soil and the water in the ground from contamination from antibiotics which are regularly applied in conventional farming.
In the same way, the ban on chemical insecticides and herbicides, helps protect biodiversity. The use of insecticides for instances, affects the population of bees and other pollinators, which in turn affects the reproduction of other plants. Therefore, the avoidance of the use of chemical insecticides in organic farming helps maintain insect population which in turn helps preserve biodiversity.
In other words, when protecting your health and that of your family as well as the environment is a priority, consuming organic food is a very effective way to do so. But this comes again with another advantage: as organic food is produced the way nature devised million of years now, it is tastier and richer in nutrients than food forced-produced with the means of chemistry.
